My Favorites, Part II

And we’re back. Had a lovely time in Chicago, despite the heat. Came back to…more heat. And more lists. So here is part two of the television survey making its way around the internet. Go here for part one.

17 Favorite mini series
I am ashamed to say I don’t watch many mini-series. I’ve heard all those Hanks/Spielberg ones are incredible, though.

18 Favorite title sequence
Well, I’ve written about this pretty extensively. Favorite title sequence is probably still from Dexter

However, I’ve been watching The Wire, and I’ve got to say, I’m really digging their openers. My favorite version so far is still from season 1, but the one from season 4 is almost creepy, with those kids. You can decide for yourself. (Season 5 omitted because I haven’t watched it yet. But I’m sure it’s great.)

 Season 1

Season 2

Season 3 (Noteworthy for the additions of Jim True-Frost – Prez, and Michael K. Williams- Omar, to the opening credits.)

Season 4

19 Best TV show cast
I dig the How I Met Your Mother folks quite a bit. Also the gang on 30 Rock, the Friends, The Office peeps, and everyone in Stars Hollow and The West Wing. But I’ve got to give this one to those Frasier folks. They were pretty much flawless.

20 Favorite kiss
I don’t know that I’ve ever been so excited to see two people kiss than Buffy and Spike in Once More With Feeling. I was watching the episode in secret (breaking the deal I made with a friend to wait until the next day) and had to be very quiet about my excitement. There was lots of silent cheering. However, I cannot find that on the Internets, so I’ll give you the second-best moment, which is when they first…you know. One of the things that makes this scene so great is that it’s so wrong. They are getting together for completely wrong reasons. For some reason, this knowledge, juxtaposed with the violence of it all and the romantic music, makes the whole thing very intriguing. And you know, kinda hot.

(Back in the days of my Buffy Fandom, I remember this scene was called “The zip heard round the world.” Hee.)

21 Favorite ship
Ummm, just one? I don’t think I can do that. Over the years, I have loved: Sam/Diane (Cheers), Chandler/Monica (Friends), Buffy/Spike (Buffy), Luke/Lorelai (Gilmore Girls), Carrie/Big (Sex and the City), Miranda/Steve (Sex and the City), Coach and Mrs. Coach (Friday Night Lights), Robin/Barney (How I Met Your Mother), Niles/Daphne (Frasier), Joel/Maggie (Northern Exposure), to name just some. Out of those, the ones that really stick out are Luke and Lorelai and Miranda and Steve.

22 Favorite series finale
Without a doubt, Sex and the City. Never has a series finale given me such closure. Which is ironic considering the two movies.

(This isn’t the only reason why it’s so satisfying, but it is a good example, no?)

23 Most annoying character
Certainly there are annoying characters who are supposed to be annoying or aggravating. Most recently, JD McCoy on Friday Night Lights fits the bill. However, someone who is just generally annoying? Hello, Dawn Summers. You outgrew your purpose in one season and then we were stuck with you.

24 Best quote
Obviously I cannot narrow this down to one. First up, in the words of Carrie Bradshaw:

Spike is love’s bitch:

“Never ever, ever give up.” – Michael Scott

Leo tries (and success) to make me cry on The West Wing:

Daphne muses about muffins. (Starts around 4:30)

25 A show you plan on watching (old or new)
Right now, I’m just trying to get through The Wire. After that, maybe Mad Men? I do enjoy that Jon Hamm, especially when he’s trying to sell me meat.

26 OMG WTF season finale
Season 6 Buffy finale, “Two to Go” and “Grave.” Five words: “We will return…YOUR SOUL.” Mind = blown. That was a damn long summer, y’all. Also, season 4 finale of Friends, with “I, Ross, take thee, Rachel”, not to mention the beginning of Chandler and Monica. Most recently: Season 4 finale of Dexter. I totally should have seen it coming, but I didn’t.

27 Best pilot episode
Friday Night Lights, hands down. They had my attention from the start, and my love from the moment Jason Street fell and little Matt Saracen had to take over. And then, you know, there’s this:

28 First TV show obsession

Cheers
, y’all. Cheers. I loved that Sam and Diane, even though when the show started, I was all of 1. God bless after school reruns.
29 Current TV show obsession
There are a lot of shows I watch now, but none that are at Buffy or Gilmore levels of obsession. (Which is by design.) I am still watching my Frasier DVDs like mad. Does that count?

30 Saddest character death

Wesley Wendhyam-Price, rogue demon hunter. Angel ended, what, six years ago? I’m still not over it. It’s all in those six words: “Would you lie to me now?”
Honorable mentions: Wallace and D’Angelo from The Wire. Where’s Wallace? Where’s the boy, String?

  1. WESLEY!!!!

Great answers to that list! You’ll be happy to know I finally got the first season of Friday Night Lights…too bad it’s going to have to wait until I finish Battlestar Galactica. My friend got me hooked. 🙂

  2. WESLEY indeed. Have I told you about watching the finale with my friend, and by the end the two of us were holding each other and screaming his name? Well, now I just did.

Yay for FNL! Hurry up and finish BSG so you can start! You will not regret it.

Also, a friend of mine is trying to get me to watch True Blood, but I’m pretty blah about the whole thing. If I really only like Buffy in terms of vampires, would I like True Blood?
