Sacked

Don’t worry, I haven’t abandoned the FNL countdown. I’ve been stuck in bed with a bad cold since Tuesday and have done little else than blow my nose, drink cold soda and watch Cheers and the first two episodes of American Idol.

I’m still sick at home, but will try to do something for the countdown today. If not today, then a big ole’ post tomorrow.

In the meantime, they finally put the digital short from NPH’s SNL on Hulu. If you didn’t get to catch it before they took it off Youtube, check it out below.

SNL Verdict

01-04While maybe not as great as the Tina Fey one last year, definitely not too shabby. NPH was great – not all of the sketches were though. A few were either too long, or not well written. But overall, I enjoyed seeing NPH host SNL.

Highlights for me included the opening monologue (“And I said to my girlfriend, what is he allergic to timing, and she said why won’t you kiss me, and I said later….  That was a long time ago.”); the save Broadway sketch (“You could get a  job in Shrek the Musical.” “What’s that supposed to mean?”); the Kathie Lee skit – which was too long, but the end was hilarious; the airline skit, which also was long but I could have watched it all day; and of course, the digital short.

For some reason, neither NBC nor Hulu have uploaded the digital short…maybe something with getting the music rights? It’s a shame, because it’s one of the best things I’ve ever seen. I know I tend to talk in hyperbole when it comes to pop culture and media — but this really is one of the best things I’ve ever seen. It’s up there with Stephen Colbert and Andrew Young singing “Let My People Go” the day Colbert came back from the strike.

One final thought – who the fuck is Taylor Swift and why does she suck so badly? And how did someone who sucks so badly make it on as the musical guest for SNL? (I know, I know, Ashlee Simpson, but still…)

Video of the Day: YouTube version of aforementioned digital short. Watch it while you can, because I am sure it will be taken down soon.

Tivo Alert!

First of all, could he be any cuter? Second, NPH is hosting SNL!!! How perfect is that? And why has it never happened before? (Ok, ok, full disclosure – I’ve known about this since it was first announced mid-December.) Third, I hope he does magic. Fourth, I hope he sings. Fifth, I hope the writing is actually decent. Besides watching Tina Fey as Sarah Palin last fall, I haven’t watched an episode of SNL since…well, since Tina Fey hosted last year. (See any patterns here?) And before that…years. Maybe I caught a stray episode in college? Once Will Ferrell and Cheri Oteri left, so did I.

Set your Tivos and DVRs, readers! This Saturday, Jan. 10th at 11:30 – NPH hosts SNL! Be there.

Video of the Day: Something on par with this Saturday would be amazing. This will never not be funny. “I got a fever!”

So stick around

I really planned to update this weekend, but it kind of got away from me. But don’t worry — in my head I am planning several posts, including my thoughts on This American Life (the TV show) season 1. (What I’ll say right now is, thanks Ira Glass, for making me never want to eat pork chops ever again. If you knew me, and knew how much I love pork chops, you’d understand this is truly a travesty.) Also, why I am kicking myself for buying Sports Night two years ago (bonus points if you catch the reference in the title of my blog), Jenny Lewis vs. Amanda Palmer, and my new-found love for Beverly Clearly.

Are you on the edge of your seat yet?

Right now, though, it’s late, and I’ve had a long weekend, so I will end this early. While you’re anxiously awaiting my next post, check out this video. Tina Fey is my hero. She writes, she produces, she acts, and now, she is more Sarah Palin than Sarah Palin. I’m sure you’ve all seen this by now, but do yourself a favor this Monday morning and watch again. And if you haven’t seen it…what are you waiting for??
